Types of Migraines and Their Treatment Methods
Headaches are among the most common neurological disorders in the world. The Migraine Research Foundation states that migraine is the third most commonly found illness in the world. Approximately 39 million people in the country suffer from the extremely debilitating migraine that is characterized by throbbing or pulsing on one side of the head. The severity of the diseases varies widely and so does the treatment.
Let us take a look at a few common types of migraines and their treatment methods.
1. Migraines With Aura
An aura is a symptom that indicates that a migraine attack is about to begin. Some examples of an aura include blind spots in vision, suddenly seeing a bright light, spots or dots, tinnitus, speech change, numbness or tingling in the skin, temporary loss of vision, change in taste or smell, and seeing jagged or wavy lines. One in three migraine patients suffer from this type, and treatment for migraines with aura includes specific migraine treatments, over-the-counter pain killers, and anti-sickness medicines. The patient’s medical practitioner might also prescribe beta blockers, anti-epilepsy medication or antidepressants.
2. Migraines Without Aura
These types of migraines come without an aura, but the symptoms remain the same. Migraines without aura is among the most common types seen in patients. The treatment options are the same as those for migraines with aura.
3. Chronic Migraine
Migraines that last for more than two weeks are classified under this, and 2 in 100 people suffer from this type of migraine. Even though medications are not always required to treat chronic migraines, some people suffering from this type will need them to manage their symptoms.
4. Vestibular Migraine
This type of migraine includes symptoms such as vertigo, balance problems, and dizziness. The treatment options are similar to those for other migraines. Moreover emphasis is given on preventive medicines like amitriptyline, candesartan, propranolol, and flunarizine.
5. Abdominal Migraine
This migraine is common in children and adults and is characterized by stomach pain that lasts anywhere between 2 and 72 hours, vomiting, and getting feverish during the attacks. Treatment is similar to other migraines, but with children, the options become limited. Hence, parents should try to look for common triggers such as travel, bright light, hunger, or poor sleep.
6. Menstrual Migraine
The falling levels of estrogen in women is said to trigger this type of migraine. Such a migraine starts around two days before one’s menstruation cycle and continues till the third day of the period. Treatment for this includes medication under the supervision of a doctor.
Apart from the abovementioned types of migraines, there are a few other types that may not be as severe. Other than medications, keeping a migraine journal, and avoiding triggers can help prevent episodes of migraine.
